Fame and fortune, here I come…
I’ve always been mad about books. As a child, when I had friends over, I’d sometimes slip away and go sit somewhere quiet to read while they were playing. I spend huge amounts of money in bookshops and belong to a bookclub. Recently I’ve started giving books to the library and only keeping the very best ones, as I’ve run out of space in my house.
I read somewhere a few years ago that all readers are frustrated writers, and it must be true because I’ve decided to give it a bash. On 21 April I’m starting a writing course that covers the basics of writing a novel. I’m very excited, but also nervous. It’s been a dream for a long time and I might find that I suck at it. Or I might be great! Hence the “fame and fortune” title of this post.
So keep your eyes peeled for the Great South African Novel that will re-define the way we look at everything ![]()

I went to the State Theatre in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon to watch a show called “The Passion of the Argentinean Tango”. It was fantastic! It’s a very sensual dance and what amazes me is that those people can do the most incredible moves without breaking a sweat. Apart from a sweat towel and some ice water, I would need a chiropractor after doing that for 5 minutes.

Something amazing happened to me. A bunch of us are getting together for prayer and communion every evening this week as part of the build-up to Easter. I got stuck in the most horrendous traffic last night on my way there, and I was not in the best of moods by the time I arrived – half an hour late. Everyone else was praying and I went to sit down and try and get my breathing and thoughts under control. My mind was still racing and I started praying and just going over my week with God and thinking about Easter and what it means. All of a sudden I thought about the woman who broke the perfume jar over Jesus’ feet and dried offf his feet with her hair. And I just knew that I have to become more like her. To stop doing, running and racing, but learn to break open my life like perfume and just sit with God and get to know Him.
Every evening there is a short reading out of the Bible as part of the preparation for Easter. When we stopped praying Sean turned around in his chair and opened his Bible. When he started reading it was the part in the Gospel of Mark about the woman with the perfume jar.
It makes me feel really special, as if God singled me out to tell me something and to let me know he thinks about me and loves me.

That’s all folks! I’m offf to get some Easter eggs.

God Speed on the book. I hope you find your voice and are able to get it to stick the paper. Keep us updated.
